Editorial: Learning How to Adapt

April 2020

What a month it's been.

My heart is with all those who are isolated and alone during this time. All those who are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, who have lost their jobs, their security, their peace. For those who have lost their health and those who have lost a loved one.

Who would have thought a few weeks ago that we'd be where we are today?

Social distancing. Staying home. Teaching online. A new normal.

We’re all adjusting as best we can: finding ways to move forward, adapt, and innovate.

We’re changing our schedules, our rhythms, our routines. We’re being intentional about reaching out and connecting with others through whatever means we can.

We’re extending an extra measure of grace to ourselves and those around us.

Because we’re in this together.

We’re facing the disappointments and fears and unknowns together. We’re sharing and learning, changing and trying new things together.

And it’s okay if we don’t get it right the first time.

This week, I swapped out the piano bench for a comfy chair.

I learned how to set new audio settings in Zoom to improve the sound (look for the tips in my 22 Creative Ideas for Teaching Music Online), and figured out how to record a video of my hands without an iPhone mount.

For more of what I've learned about teaching online (so far), tune into my latest podcast episode

What are you learning this week?

(P.S. Looking to catch up on some professional development this month? I'm re-opening my free 5-day Music Education Basics Workshop through 4/15. Sign up here >>)

Let me know how you're doing and how I can support you in your ministry and teaching during this time.

Stay well, friends!
