A Day in the Life

Living room work space | Ashley Danyew

A few years ago, I wrote a "Day in the Life" post. Lots of things have changed since then, so I thought it might be nice to share an updated version with y'all.

Come see what a typical day in my life looks like!

A Day in the Life

9:05 a.m. - I carry my coffee (half espresso, half hot chocolate) to my desk in the living room and turn on my laptop. I check my email to make sure there's nothing urgent, but I don't normally respond to things right away. I prefer to take a little time in the morning to read (articles and a few of my favorite blogs) and check in on social media and our websites. After this, I respond to a few quick emails, proof my newsletter one last time in MailChimp, and schedule it to send.

10:14 a.m. - I open up my dissertation document (Chapter 4!) and start writing. I like settling in to work on longer, more focused projects during this block of my day.

11:57 a.m. - Lunch time! Since SD and I both work from home most of the time, I join him in the kitchen to fix my usual — a bowl of Chobani and granola — or heat up some leftovers.

The magnolias are starting to bloom this week! So pretty.

12:30 p.m. - After lunch, we take a quick walk through our neighborhood. This is my favorite part of the day!

1:06 p.m. - Back home again, I return to my desk and spend some time working through my email: filing messages and responding to a few that require longer responses. I run one response by SD before sending.

1:25 p.m. - I usually have a smaller window of time at this point in the afternoon, so I work on shorter projects like rehearsal planning, lesson prep, or writing blog post content. Today, I take a mini break to fix a second cup of coffee, then work on a custom order for the shop and prepare it for print and finish up some grading for my class tomorrow.

2:45 p.m. - I grab a few books, assignment sheets, and rhythm cards and leave to go teach a few piano lessons. The school where I teach is about 10 minutes away, so this gives me plenty of time to get there, park, and get the room set up for my first lesson. Today, I teach three lessons from 3:15-5:00 p.m.

5:35 p.m. - I get home, put down my things, and pull out my laptop for a few minutes. I finish editing and prepping two blog posts to publish this week. Since we have rehearsal tonight (and the weather is so nice), SD suggests grabbing takeout and having a picnic on the canal. We call and place our order.

The Erie Canal — a perfect picnic spot!

5:42 p.m. - We leave the house, pick up our dinner order, and head to the canal!

6:15 p.m. - After a quick picnic dinner, we walk over to the church and get things set up for rehearsal.

6:30 p.m. - We meet with our group of singers for our second choir rehearsal of the season (a 6-week Spring session) and stay afterward to chat with a few people.

7:40 p.m. - We gather our things, lock up the church, and head home.

8:02 p.m. - We spend a little time catching up on emails, making lists for tomorrow, and straightening up a bit.

8:57 p.m. - Ready to wind down, we settle in on the couch to watch an episode of one of our favorite shows — Shark Tank!
