Piano duets are one of the most enjoyable ways to make music with another person—whether you're adding something special to a worship service, planning a studio recital or informance, or just looking for an excuse to sit down at the piano and play with a friend or student.

In my experience, most piano students love the chance to perform together, and even small churches have at least one person in the congregation with some playing experience. Often, people just need to be asked and invited to participate.

If you're a church musician looking for a duet partner, reach out to someone in your choir or congregation who you know plays; they may be more willing than you'd expect.

If you're a piano teacher, duets are a wonderful way to give students a sense of ensemble playing.

Once you've found a partner (or identified two people who want to play together), choose a collection or two from the list below. Be sure to purchase two copies so both performers have a copy for home practice. If both partners are fairly accomplished and comfortable sight-reading, spend some time reading through pieces together to get a feel for what they sound like with both parts. If that's not realistic, choose a few pieces to begin working on, decide who will play which part, and set up a few rehearsals over the coming weeks.
